Liver Failure: Is Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System Effective?
Since its introduction in 1993, molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS) albumin dialysis has been a subject of research, with the hope of effectively treating patients with acute liver failure. The impact of MARS treatment on outcome as well as clinical and laboratory variables has been investigated widely in small non-randomized studies. However, larger studies with longer follow-up time are required to determine the true usefulness of MARS treatment in different liver failure etiologies.

Review Of Brazil's HIV/AIDS Treatment Programs Shows Importance Of Generic Drugs, Researchers Say
"Brazil has been successful in its nearly 20-year effort to treat people living with" HIV/AIDS, and generic medicines have been "a large part of the solution," according to a recent Health Affairs review, UPI reports (UPI, 7/14). The review examines Brazil"s passing of "a law in the 1990s that guaranteed citizens free and universal access to drugs for HIV and AIDS treatment" as well as the country"s production of generic HIV/AIDS medicines in public factories, AHN reports. "The [Brazilian] government also prompted drug companies to lower their prices by threatening to make generic versions of [patented] HIV and AIDS drugs in the public factories," writes AHN (Goodhue, 7/14).

Swine Flu Has Struck 41 Countries, 11,034 Cases, Including 85 Deaths

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the number of swine flu A(H1N1) cases has risen to 11,034, while the total number of deaths has reached 85. All deaths have occurred in four countries: Mexico, USA, Canada and Costa Rica. Authorities in Mexico say that the spread of swine flu has dropped significantly. Health experts say it is still too early to predict which way this outbreak will go. Public health authorities are concerned that the next winter flu season may be a bumper one with this novel A(H1N1) virus strain circulating around the world. Fortunately, swine flu is no more serious than ordinary seasonal human influenza.
