6,552 Confirmed Swine Flu Cases And 9 Deaths In The USA
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced at the end of the day of 22nd May, 2009, that so far 6,552 humans have been infected with the A(H1N1) influenza virus, also known as swine flu. This new A (H1N2) flu virus originates from pigs and was first identified in April this year. The virus is human transmissible, says the CDC, meaning it spreads from person-to-person, and has sparked a growing outbreak of illness throughout the USA. The CDC stresses that cases of confirmed human infection are occurring all over the world.

Wyeth Reports Publication Of Phase 3 Data For Bazedoxifene/Conjugated Estrogens
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth (NYSE: WYE), announced the publication in Fertility and Sterility of data from a Phase 3 clinical study that showed that the investigational compound bazedoxifene/conjugated estrogens (BZA/CE) significantly reduced the frequency and severity of hot flushes and improved measures of vaginal atrophy when compared to placebo. In this study, uterine bleeding was not statistically different from placebo and the rate of endometrial hyperplasia in doses being considered for therapeutic use was Fertility and Sterility, is from the Selective estrogens Menopause And Response to Therapy (SMART-1) clinical trial. SMART-1 was designed to explore the hypothesis that bazedoxifene, when paired with conjugated estrogens, may have the potential to eliminate the need for progestin in menopausal therapy in women with an intact uterus. BZA/CE is characterized by Wyeth as a TSEC (tissue selective estrogen complex) as it combines a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) with conjugated estrogens.

Impact Of Medicare Part D On Medical Spending Addressed By NEJM Study
After enrolling in Medicare Part D, seniors who previously had limited or no drug coverage spent more on prescriptions and less on other medical care services such as hospitalizations and visits to the doctor"s office, according to a University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health study. Published in the July 2 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the study also found that seniors who had relatively good drug benefits prior to enrolling in Medicare Part D spent somewhat more on prescriptions and, at the same time, increased their spending on other medical care services.

Process Begins To Define "Meaningful Use" Of Electronic Health Records

Building on the historic $19 billion investment provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act), efforts continued today to further the national adoption and implementation of health information technology (HIT) -- an essential tool to modernize the health care system and bring about improved health for all Americans. The Health Information Technology (HIT) Policy Committee, a Federal Advisory Committee (FACA) to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), met today to begin the process of defining "meaningful use" of electronic health records (EHRs). This meeting is a first step for the department, as it investigates possible definitions for meaningful use. "We are moving fast to achieve the President"s goal to improve the health and well-being of every American through the on-going use of health information technology," stated HHS" National Coordinator for Health Information Technology David Blumenthal, M.D., M.P.P. "The work of the policy committee is a first step toward assuring that technology -- the electronic health record -- is used in a meaningful way to provide better patient care." The Recovery Act provides Medicare and Medicaid incentive payments to eligible providers, such as physicians and hospitals, in order to increase the adoption of EHRs. To receive the incentive payments, providers must demonstrate "meaningful use" of a certified EHR. Building upon the work done by the HIT Policy Committee, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), along with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), will be developing a proposed rule that provides greater detail on the incentive program and proposes a definition of meaningful use. CMS expects to issue the proposed rule in late 2009, which will be followed by a comment period. The recommendations discussed today represent extensive work by the Committee"s Meaningful Use Workgroup to review and evaluate diverse ideas and contributions from Workgroup members along with information from a public hearing on meaningful use convened in April by the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS). The NCVHS hearing brought together key healthcare and information technology stakeholder groups. The workgroup also reviewed written comments from additional diverse stakeholders. A public comment period on today"s recommendations will be open through the close of business on Friday, June 26, 2009. "The workgroup"s recommendations demonstrate the breadth of meaningful use and the linkage of use to individual care and population health outcomes," stated Dr. Blumenthal.
