Somalia: Majority Of North Mogadishu Population Flees As Fighting Escalates
The resumption of fighting in Mogadishu, Somalia"s capital, has forced the majority of people living in the Yaqshid, Karan, and Abdul Azziz districts in the north of the city to flee, according to the international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Mç©decins Sans Frontiç¨res (MSF). Continuous shelling, explosions, and open combat among various armed groups have claimed the lives of dozens of civilians and plunged the city into chaos. As a consequence, MSF has been forced to close its medical centers in the area.

63 Percent Of RA Patients Suffer Psychiatric Disorders, With Depressive Spectrum Conditions Most Likely
Over half (63%) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) also suffer from psychiatric disorders, with the majority of these (87%) occurring in the depressive spectrum, according to the results of a new study presented recently at EULAR 2009, the Annual Congress of the European League Against Rheumatism in Copenhagen, Denmark. Interestingly, over half (52%) of the patients studied indicated that they had experienced stress events before the onset of their RA.

Celebrity Performer Duo Receives MDA Directors' Awards

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has awarded its highest philanthropic achievement honor, the MDA Directors" Award, to two entertainment industry celebrities. Alison Sweeney and Ace Young were honored for their outstanding contributions to MDA"s battle against muscular dystrophy and related disease . The award recognizes philanthropic contributions in the areas of corporate and organizational sponsorship, media and entertainment industry support, and personal fundraising. MDA Chairman of the Board Dr. R. Rodney Howell presented the awards to both at the July meeting of the MDA Board of Directors in Los Angeles. Sweeney is the host for NBC"s hit reality series The Biggest Loser and stars in the network"s award-winning daytime drama Days of our Lives. In addition to being an accomplished writer, producer and director, she serves as an MDA Celebrity Ambassador. Young is also an MDA Celebrity Ambassador and an award-winning vocalist who released his debut CD last year. He was a contestant and finalist on the fifth season of the hit TV talent show American Idol. Young has performed as a guest on MTV"s Total Request Live, hosted a solo concert at the Pepsi Center in Denver and starred in the recent Broadway production of Grease. "Both of these outstanding performers have something else special in common," Howell said. "Both are MDA ambassadors who use their special communication skills to help spread the word about MDA"s dual mission of help and hope. And both of them volunteer their valuable time to serve as co-hosts of the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon. Their unstinting philanthropy in combination with their marvelous talents has helped make the Telethon a continuing success and keep MDA high in the public consciousness. MDA is the nonprofit health agency dedicated to curing muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases by funding worldwide research. The Association also provides comprehensive health care and support services, advocacy and education. The majority of contributions to MDA come from individual donors.
